FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND RESOURCES FOR CLIENTS
WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?
Occupational Therapy is a diverse field of rehabilitation. We are unique as we have experience in physical, mental, cognitive, and social barriers and disabilities. This makes us unique problem solvers and case managers. We at Affinity OT can help you navigate the medical world, improve the safety of you or your loved ones at home, help you with your cognitive and mental abilities after a concussion, assist in reducing your anxiety after a car accident, and more.
I WAS INVOLVED IN A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT. WHAT OTÂ SERVICES AM I ENTITLED TO?
After you've been in an accident, immediately report your claim to ICBC. You will be eligible for approved treatments with a physiotherapist, kinesiologist, and/or a psychologist. Occupational Therapists, however, are not pre-approved services. If you believe you have suffered or was diagnosed with a concussion, you are likely approved for occupational therapy visits. Please talk to your claim representative.
WHAT SORT OF WORKSAFE BC SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?
Currently, we are only contracted to complete Heavy Equipment Operator and Commercial Driving assessments for WorksafeBC. Please click here for more details about these assessment.
I'M A VETERAN AND I'M STRUGGLING WITH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.
Veteran Affairs Canada members who are experiencing physical or mental health issues can contact Veteran Affairs Canada at 1-866-522-2122. You can also sign up for a "My VAC Account" (https://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/e_services) to see what services you're eligible for or apply for services. Or we can help contact them on your behalf. Care for Veterans and RCMP members is the responsibility of Medavie Blue Cross and we are an official provider.
DO YOU HAVE A CLINIC AVAILABLE FOR TREATMENT?
Currently we are home and community based providers. We will come to you! Whether we provide treatment in your home or out in the community, we can meet you where you feel most comfortable.
WHAT IS A CONCUSSION?
There's a lot of information out there about concussion, both positive and negative so be careful where you get your information! Sometimes the media can be the worst enemy when it comes to concussion information and recovery. Here is a short 5 minute clip that explains concussion quite well with simple language. The positive is that 80-90% of people with concussion recover in 4-6 weeks.
I'D LIKE TO SEE AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST, WHAT DO I DO NEXT? HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
Great! First, we should determine why you need to see an OT. Have you been in an car accident (i.e. ICBC), workplace accident (i.e. WorkSafeBC), or have an injury that has take you off work (i.e. long-term disability). These are the main funding sources for occupational therapy and we can help talk to your case manager about OT funding. But if you or someone you care about just needs some extra help, we can see patients privately as well. The fees are $150 per hour.
WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN WORKING WITH AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST.
First, we will perform an assessment where we may ask you many questions about how your illness or injury has affected your life. We will identify the barriers that are preventing you from achieving your goals. We prioritize these issues with you in order to work on the goals that mean the most to you. We approach treatment from various angles and we also collaborate with any of your other health providers in achieving these goals. For more information contact info@affinityot.com
DO YOU DIRECT BILL?
This depends on the funder. We direct bill for ICBC and Medavie Blue Cross.
